Business

Business. What is does business mean to me? Kids in schools across the country write these types of essays all the time. "What does ___________ mean to me?" Freedom, happiness, America, and summer vacation are popular topics. As we move through our education we are asked to write on more substantial, or controversial topics. Topics, it is hoped, will stir creativity, passion, and maybe some sound sentence structure. So, for academic purposes I think I'll start this blog with a simple essay about what business means to me.
What does it mean to specialize, or have a degree, in business? Universities crank out thousands of "business majors" and MBA's every year, but what do these people do? A little marketing, some accounting and finance, maybe supply-chain management or information systems management, but most of them end up in a generic job playing work all day. They dress up, they go to meetings, they yell about deadlines, they come up with the occasional good idea, but mostly they're just cogs. So, why would so many people actively seek out this "profession" of business? Maybe they like they busy work. Well, I do not like the busy work. I do not like playing work. I like actually doing something. I like business. Business, the invisible engine of America - and I'm the expert mechanic who gets to work on all the parts to squeeze out a few more horsepower out of the supply chain, a few more miles per gallon out of finance, a smoother ride from accounting, a more satisfying rumble, hum or rev from marketing. Business is a complicated piece of social and economic engineering that requires care, service and knowledge to make it run right. That is what business means to me in simple terms.
